What To Do Before You Apply for College/Scholarships Checklist:

_1. Check the college's website for updates, and their financial aid page for Freshman Scholarships.

  • Double check with your letter writers, give them a deadline and ask them to write about your particular strengths and attributes that you exhibit in your class.

  • Send your test scores. Make sure that the SAT/ACT scores are sent to the colleges and universities that you are applying to. You can submit them at the time of the test.

  • Proofread the entire application. Double check that your application is error free. Ask a parent or another adult to read over it. Make the necessary corrections.

  • Reach out to the admissions office at the school and department chair by sending an email, or a friendly phone call letting them know that you are interested in attending their school and would love to work in their department.

  • Let your essays sit for a day or two. Go back and re-read them.  Add words and phrases that will SELL your story to the admissions and scholarship readers.

  • Visit the college you want to attend.  Sometimes a good college isn’t a good fit.  Ask questions from others who have gone.  Take the tour and ask about student organizations and student life.

  • Apply well before the deadline.

  • Send your transcripts out via CFNC.org, get recruited, and apply for scholarships.

  • Go to the CMS website and apply for an internship. http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/cmsdepartments/ci/cte/Pages/Internships.aspx  https://www.cms.gov/About-CMS/Career-Information/CareersatCMS/Pathways-Programs-for-Students-and-Recent-Graduates.html

***If you are first generation check out the WalMart First Generation Scholarships and many others.  Ask your school if they have these types of scholarships.
